Our town is an aging- and dementia-friendly community

Dementia Friends will be hosting an informational session Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 9 to 10 a.m. here at the senior center. Seating is limited to 20 to meet social distancing requirements. Please, call (508) 865-9247 to pre-register before Sept. 24. You will learn what dementia is and what it’s like to live with the disease. You will also learn tips for communicating with people who have dementia. An act of kindness can help those with memory loss.

Free concerts

The Millbury Credit Union is sponsoring a free concert every Wednesday from Sept. 16 to Oct. 7, from noon to 1:30 p.m. along with lunch. The concerts are limited to 50 people in compliance with the governor’s guidelines. You must call and make a reservation for the concert you want to attend. We will enforce social distancing and you must wear a mask. This is a rain or shine event. A tent will be provided in case of rain. We will also provide transportation for those who need it. Come and enjoy a wonderful afternoon with friends.

Inter-generational engagement

Worcester State University, with support of the Central Mass. Agency on Aging, is working to reduce social isolation among the elderly population during the pandemic. They are offering online interaction and learning opportunities. There are video modules, virtual classes and weekly connections with university students. Chrome workbooks are provided. Memory Café

Our Memory Café is now traveling. Julieanne is now visiting with activities and a small “cheer-me-up” gift. If you or a family member needs a visit, please, call her. The visits are Tuesdays and Thursdays. She is also assisting in applying for SNAP benefits for all those in need. Call for more info or to make an appointment.

Volunteer needed

We are in need of a Meals on Wheels driver one day a week. If you have one to two hours a week that you would like to assist us with this very important service to the home bound elderly, please call us. We will offer training. Drivers are given mileage and a stipend.

Grab-and-Go lunches

Our Grab-and-Go lunches are Monday through Friday until we are able to open our congregate meal site. You can order a lunch and drive up to the door grab the lunch leave a donation and drive away. Pickup time is 11:30 a.m. to noon. You must order 48 hours in advance. Our monthly menu is on the town’s website, but if you want one, we will be happy to mail you one.

Food pantry

Our food pantry is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no limit to how many times you can request food. We are here to assist you. Even if you have received something from us this month, you can still request, again. Our pantry has frozen meats, milk, cheese and eggs along with many wonderful food items. The pickup point is the front door of the senior center.

Blood pressure clinic

Our blood pressure clinic is every Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. This is held outside the building. Just park in front and sit on one of benches and we will call you up.
